I had the pleasure of reviewing Mohican Lake, a mystery written by Maura Clegg. From the first page, I knew I was in for a treat. Maura tells the story through the main character, Madigan O’Malley, a spirited 26 year old girl who lives in the pool house of her wealthy parents.
Madigan receives a letter from a lawyer’s office and right away she lets you know her opinion of lawyers. The letter informs her that an aunt whom she has never met has passed on and named her sole beneficiary of a lakeside resort in New Hampshire, The Masterful Mohican. Of course Madigan is wary but she ventures forth to Lake Mohican and discovers a grand resort she immediately falls in love with. She realizes that The Masterful Mohican is her ticket out of her snobby, overbearing mother’s home and that finally she has a worthwhile goal in life. But, someone does not want her there. Madigan’s life is threatened and there is danger at every turn, yet she also finds protection and love in the living – and the not-so-living.
Maura has created some very interesting characters in this book and has painted a picture of a beautiful resort that I can only dream of making reservations at. I grew to love Madigan, her father, and even the lawyer but the jury is still out regarding her mother!
I enjoyed reading Maura’s book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a bit of humor mixed in.
